A retaining wall has one job: hold back soil and a change in grade. When one starts leaning, bulging, or cracking, it is rarely because the blocks or stones were weak. It is almost always because water was never given a way out.
The real reasons walls fail
- No drainage: without gravel backfill and a perforated drain, water and frost build enormous pressure behind the wall and push it forward.
- A poor base: a wall built on soft or uncompacted soil settles unevenly and tips.
- No batter or setback: tall walls need to lean slightly back into the hill, not stand perfectly vertical.
- Wrong wall for the height: a tall wall holding real soil pressure needs engineering, footings, and sometimes reinforcement that a simple garden wall does not.
How a wall that lasts is built
A properly engineered wall starts below the surface. We excavate to solid ground, build and compact a base, and set the first course dead level because every course above depends on it.
Behind the wall we place drainage stone wrapped in filter fabric with a perforated pipe at the base, so water is collected and carried away instead of building up. The wall is given the correct batter for its height, and tall walls get the footings and reinforcement they need.
Permits and engineering
In Massachusetts, taller retaining walls (often over four feet) typically require a permit and sometimes engineering. This is not red tape for its own sake, it is what keeps a wall holding tons of soil from becoming a hazard. We handle this as part of the job and build to code.
